Port Acres favorite scare-master is back with new tricks

The Port Arthur News

By Justin Sanchez

The News staff writer

PORT ACRES — Jake Griffin has been bringing tricks and treats to Port Acres with
his Haunted Acres Manor since 2000, and with a new location, he’s looking to raise
the bar this year.

Located on Jade Ave. in Port Acres, Griffin has a brand new setup, and some fresh
ideas set to scare Southeast Texans stiff. The show begins on Halloween.

“I’ve been watching a bunch of Halloween movies like Friday the 13th,” Griffin said. “I
just watched Saw IV, too.”

He said he draws his inspiration from horror movies, but keeps it fresh by throwing in
his own theme every year.

“Some of the ideas come from movies, but also what I think would be scary,” Griffin
said.

The Haunted Acres Manor has its own back story, too, which can be read on the
website, at hauntedacresmanor.us.

Taking place inside of an old garage, the haunted acres sets the stage with classic
horror characters including Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

A static-filled TV runs in a dark room to help give an authentic Texas Chainsaw
Massacre vibe, Griffin said.

The cleverly laid out manor will have attendees weaving in and out from one room to
another, leaving them on edge at all times.

“I love the scare factor and wandering what is around the corner,” he said. “Having
people experience that fear is what I love to do.”

Griffin’s mother, Franny, said this is something Jake has been doing since he was a
kid.

“He used to do his hallway, decorating it with lights,” she said. “He did his room, too,
and he did it all himself.”

It’s not all about the big kids, however, so don’t be afraid to bring children.

“This is something I cherish because it’s safe for young and old,” he said.

For those who might be too timid to take the journey through the free haunted house,
a side door is available where every attendee can pick up treats.

Not wanting to exclude anyone, Griffin’s tricks and treats are on the house.

“This is about community and giving them something to do,” Griffin said. “It’s
absolutely free.”

Griffin said when he graduates from college, he hopes to make his Haunted Acres
Manor even more elaborate.

Until then, he’ll continue to watch AMC horror movies, and brainstorm for fresh ideas.
